Our Story

Background

YRChess is a student-led non-profit organization dedicated to promoting casual, in-person chess around York Region and beyond. We aim to popularize chess amongst adolescents, however, we noticed that most chess games are within an online setting. As individuals who have previously competed in in-person chess tournaments, we understand how much fun one can have at these tournaments. We also understand that many people are not interested in competitive settings due to the stress accumulated while playing.

Mission

Thus, YRChess aims to promote in-person chess in a casual atmosphere, where people of all ages, regardless of playing experience, may network and bond through the game of chess. We are centered around being a gateway to beginners/those who weren’t interested in chess and also provide a relaxing way for more experienced players to compete casually.

Future

Given that we are still in our early developmental stages, YRChess is currently limiting its operations and event planning to high schools in York Region and surrounding districts. Future plans, however, will likely be expanded to include schools and universities across all of Toronto.
